What is Spyware?
Spyware is a piece of software that installs on your computer or laptop sometimes with, but more often without your permission. The purpose of spyware is to monitor your computer usage. This includes gathering information about your age, gender, and what websites you visit; this information is normally used for targeted advertising. Spyware may also be used to aid identity theft. It’s easy to see why with the current high profile of identity theft, that spyware removal is becoming a big thing. Spyware can be downloaded by clicking on a unwanted e-mail attachment or even installing a so called “FREE” program.
What is Adware?
Similar to Spyware, Adware monitors your web browsing and then delivers you targeted adverts. This type of malware is often considered as a type of spyware luckily most spyware and adware can be removed.
What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is a kind of malware (malicious software) that criminals install on your computer so they can lock it from a remote location. Ransomware generates a pop-up window, webpage, or email warning from what looks like an official authority. It explains that your computer has been locked because of possible illegal activities on it and demands payment before you can access your files and programs again.
There are several free ways to help protect your computer against ransomware,malware and spyware. These include the following:
- Keep all of the software on your computer up to date. Make sure automatic updating is turned on to get all the latest Microsoft security updates.
- Keep your firewall turned on.
- Don’t open spam email messages or click links on suspicious websites.
- Download a good antivirus, which is free, or use another reputable antivirus and anti-malware program.
